ARTIST BIO & STATEMENT

Carmen Puig is originally from Barcelona and is currently based in New York City. She developed her interests in art during her studies which greatly focused on Latin American art history. She developed her distinct style after moving to Mexico and working in an art gallery and in an artist residency and exposing herself to the rich tradition of Mexican craftsmanship.

“In this series, I am creating a collection of works that are visually playful and serve as a vehicle to experience a child-like approach to adulthood. My inspiration is drawn from my everyday life in Mexico, encompassing elements of religion, nature, craftsmanship, and the vibrant colours of building facades.

My artistic process takes root in the simplicity of crayon drawings, which metamorphose into intricate textile pieces. The translation of these drawings into textile works creates a dialogue between the raw, spontaneous energy of crayons and the meticulous, structured craft of textile work. It's a delicate dance, striking a balance between the unfettered spirit of childhood and the responsibilities of adult life. It is within this interplay that I attempt to capture a part of life itself—one that mirrors the balance and coexistence between spontaneity and control.”
